Preparing for your wax
By following these tips, you can minimize discomfort, avoid skin irritation, and get the most effective waxing results.
Preparing for a body wax involves several important steps to ensure that the process goes smoothly and results in the best possible outcome. Here's how to prepare:
1. Exfoliate Your Skin
Exfoliate the area to be waxed 24–48 hours before your appointment. This helps remove dead skin cells, which can reduce the risk of ingrown hairs and improve the wax's effectiveness.
Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt to avoid irritating the skin.
2. Grow Your Hair to the Right Length
Ensure that your hair is the right length for waxing. For most types of wax, hair should be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long (about the length of a grain of rice). This length helps the wax grip the hair properly for removal.
If your hair is too short, the wax may not work effectively. If it's too long, it could be more painful, and you might want to trim it slightly before waxing.
3. Avoid Moisturizers and Oily Products
Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the day of the wax. These can interfere with the wax’s ability to adhere to the hair.
Make sure your skin is clean and dry when you arrive for your appointment.
4. Pain Management
If you're concerned about pain, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your appointment. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase sensitivity.
You might want to avoid caffeine, as it can make your skin more sensitive.
5. Avoid Sun Exposure
Try to avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, or self-tanning products for 24–48 hours before your wax. Waxing can irritate sunburned skin, and tanned skin may be more sensitive.
6. Wear Loose Clothing
Opt for loose, comfortable clothing to wear after your waxing session, especially if you're getting waxed on sensitive areas like the bikini line. Tight clothing can rub against freshly waxed skin and cause irritation.
7. Know Your Skin Type and Health
If you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies, consider testing the wax on a small area first (if possible).
If you have any medical conditions, such as varicose veins, psoriasis, or are using certain medications like Retin-A or Accutane, let your wax technician know in advance.
8. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water before your waxing session. Well-hydrated skin is more elastic and may be less painful during the process.

What to expect during your appointment

If it’s your first time, don’t worry! I am used to working with all skin types and I am here to ensure your comfort. If you have any concerns or questions, ask them! I will be happy to guide you through the process.

1. Arrival and Consultation
-
I will ensure you have completed a medical form. This helps me understand your skin type, any skin conditions, or medications you are taking (such as Accutane, Retin-A, or other topical treatments). This helps decide a treatment plan.
2. Getting Comfortable
-
You will be asked to remove clothing from the area to be waxed. For example, if you're getting a Hollywood wax, you will need to undress from the waist down, and for leg waxes, you’ll need to expose your legs.
-
You'll be positioned on a treatment table
3. Skin Preparation
-
I will cleanse the area to be waxed to remove oils, dirt, or any leftover lotions, ensuring the wax adheres properly.
-
I may need to apply a pre-waxing oil or powder to protect your skin and ensure smooth wax application.
4. Waxing Process
-
Hard Wax: I apply warm wax to the area in the direction of hair growth. After the wax cools and hardens, I will remove it by pulling it off quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. This method is good for sensitive skin and is more comfortable than strip wax.
-
Soft Wax: For larger areas like legs or arms, soft wax may be applied, and a cloth or paper strip is used to remove the wax.
-
I work in small sections to ensure the wax is applied and removed efficiently.
5. Pain and Discomfort
-
You can expect some discomfort, especially if it’s your first time. Waxing can be a little painful, but it’s quick and the pain generally subsides soon after the wax is removed and the results are worth it!
6. Post-Waxing Care
-
After the wax is finished, I use only the best oils and lotions calm the skin.
7. Payment and Scheduling Future Appointments
-
Payment is by card or cash
-
Book your next appointment to avoid disappointment
8. Results
-
Immediately after waxing, your skin may appear red, and there might be small bumps or irritation. This is normal and should go away within a few hours to a day, you can also take an antihistamine.
-
Over the next few days, your skin will feel smooth, and you should notice slower, finer regrowth. Regular waxing will typically result in softer, sparser hair regrowth over time.

FAQ's

1. Does waxing hurt?
-
Waxing can be uncomfortable, especially in sensitive areas. The pain is usually described as a quick sting or pulling sensation when the wax is removed. The more frequently you wax, the less painful it can become over time as your hair becomes finer.
2. How long does the hair need to be for waxing?
-
Hair should be about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch long (roughly the length of a grain of rice) for most types of wax to effectively grab onto and remove the hair. If it's too short, the wax might not adhere properly. If it's too long, it may be more painful, so trimming may be necessary.
3. How long does waxing last?
-
Waxing can last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle. Regular waxing over time can result in slower and finer hair regrowth.
4. Can I wax while pregnant?
-
Yes, you can wax while pregnant, but it is important to be cautious. Pregnancy hormones can make your skin more sensitive. Always consult your doctor and inform your wax technician of your pregnancy to ensure the best care.
5. How should I prepare for a wax?
-
Exfoliate the area 24–48 hours before your appointment, avoid applying lotions or oils on the day of your appointment, and ensure that your hair is the right length (about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch). Also, avoid sun exposure, hot showers, and heavy exercise for 24 hours after waxing.
6. What areas of the body can be waxed?
-
Waxing can be performed on almost any area of the body, including the legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, chest, back, and face (such as the eyebrows, upper lip, chin, and sideburns). However, areas like the genital region and face require special care or techniques used by a specialist such as myself.
7. What type of wax is best for sensitive skin?
-
Soft wax (strip wax) and hard wax are both options for sensitive skin. Hard wax tends to be gentler, as it adheres only to the hair and not the skin, making it less likely to cause irritation. I use hard wax on the majority of areas to improve comfort for my clients.
8. What should I do after waxing?
-
After waxing, avoid hot showers, saunas, and excessive sweating for 24 hours. Don't touch the waxed area, and refrain from using lotions, creams, or deodorants that may contain alcohol or fragrance. Apply soothing products, such as Bush Balm or aloe vera gel, to calm the skin.
9. Can I wax if I have sensitive skin or a skin condition?
-
If you have sensitive skin, conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or varicose veins, or if you're using products like Retin-A or Accutane, it's important to inform your wax professional. Waxing can irritate certain skin conditions, and a professional can offer alternatives or adjust the process accordingly.
11. Why do I get ingrown hairs after waxing?
-
Ingrown hairs can occur when hair grows back under the skin. To reduce the risk, exfoliate regularly and avoid tight clothing immediately after waxing. If you experience ingrown hairs, there are treatments like exfoliating scrubs or creams designed to help with this issue which are available at The Smooth Skin Clinic.
12. Can I wax if I'm on my period?
-
Yes, you can still wax during your period, but you may be more sensitive, so it's important to communicate with me. It’s advised to wear a tampon or menstrual cup during the appointment for comfort.
13. How often should I wax?
-
It’s generally recommended to wax every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle. However, if you wax regularly, you will find that your hair regrows slower and finer over time, which can lead to less frequent waxing and less hair!
14. Can I wax at home?
-
Yes, there are at-home waxing kits available, but they are not be as effective as professional waxing. If you're new to waxing, it’s better to start with a professional to ensure you get the best results with minimal discomfort or irritation.
15. What should I do if I have a reaction after waxing?
-
If you experience redness, bumps, or irritation, it’s usually normal and should subside within a few hours to a day. You can also take an antihistamine to prevent this reaction. For more severe reactions, such as swelling, blistering, or pain that doesn't go away, consult a healthcare professional. Avoid scratching or picking at the area.
